Who Really Offers the Most HD Channels?
The battle is on! Actually, it’s been raging for quite a while. The various providers of pay-TV content all claim to have the most high-definition channels at one time or another. As one might suspect, the number of HD channels any particular service is offering depends a great deal on how they are counted. Sometimes business and politics have much in common.
A recent article suggests that DirecTV, the nation’s largest provider of satellite television programming, may be fudging the numbers a little in order to claim the most HD channels when compared with their rival DISH Network and the cable TV companies. As more and more consumers purchase high-definition televisions, the importance of programming in high-definition becomes more important to the pay-TV providers.
In a recent advertisement, DirecTV claims to 130 HD channels, but according to the above-mentioned article, the company is inflating the number by including 18 pay-per-view channels in addition to the channels that most consumers would consider as actual channels – channels like The Discovery Channel, TLC, The History Channel and others. At the same time, the ad claims that DISH Network offers “barely over 100″ HD channels.
The consensus seems to be that it is actually DISH Network that currently has the most HD channels to offer, but that will not bring an end to this battle. Both DirecTV and DISH Network will undoubtedly continue to increase the number of HD channels being offered and it will be left to the consumer to figure out what the truth is.
